Notice of policy change at Grandview: private therapy services
Grandview Children's Centre recently approved a change in policy that affects Grandview Kids, their families, and our staff.
We want to ensure the public is informed about this policy change as it also affects all families in Durham Region that seek private clinical services for their children in our community, including those who seek private services in addition to clinical services their children receive at Grandview.
In their personal time, some of our clinical staff offer private professional services. Previously, a policy was in place that restricted our clinical staff from providing private therapy services to any child or youth deemed eligible for service at Grandview. The former policy existed to protect families by preventing any perceived or real conflict of interest.
The change to the policy enables staff that choose to offer private therapy services to provide it to any family, including those with children eligible for service at Grandview.
We remain concerned about perceived or actual conflict of interest; therefore, the following stipulations are included in the revised policy to prevent conflict of interest:
- clinical employees of Grandview are not permitted to solicit Grandview clients for private service;
- employees of Grandview are not permitted to recommend private practitioners; and
- parents/guardians seeking private clinical services will be directed to search the online lists of private therapists maintained by the professional college for each discipline (see list below).
If a family chooses to engage a therapist offering private services from one of the online lists, and that therapist is also an employee of Grandview, all contact between the family and the therapist(s) will occur independently and not in association with Grandview. To be clear: Grandview employees will not engage in any discussion(s) regarding their private therapy services with clients who are in the process of being discharged or in the process of transition to school, nor will they make arrangements to see Grandview clients privately during Grandview working time.
Families should be aware that Grandview staff are not required to offer private professional services; however, those who do will determine when and to whom services are offered.
If you have questions or concerns about the revised policy, please contact Grandview's Director of Clinical Services, Leslie Suite, at 905-728-1673 x 2252 or toll free at 1-800-304-6180 x 2252.
