Meet the students at Grandview
In accordance with our 2012-2017 Strategic Plan, Grandview Children's Centre participates in research activity and teaching in the field of children’s rehabilitation.
We are proud to introduce the students currently learning at Grandview:
Paige Crawford lives in Oshawa who is at Grandview from February to June 14, 2013 for her high school co-op placement. Paige wanted to work with kids and learned about Grandview from her teacher who set up an interview for her with Manager of Therapeutic Recreation and Volunteer Services Cathy Kelly, Physiotherapist Marj Kennelly and Occupational Therapy / Physiotherapy Assistant Kara Graham. In order to earn 2 credits for her placement, Paige must complete 220 hours of work at Grandview, so each week day she's on-site in Oshawa from 8:30am to 11:30am, unless she's on a school field trip for her outdoor education course. Paige works with the students from Campbell Children's School and her responsibilities include prep work, such as getting equipment ready for therapy, separating clean and dirty toys, and setting up for the day. Paige enjoys working hands-on with the kids in groups such as Wild Wheelers, Breath Support, Gross Motor Group (bike riding, swimming), and working with students who have low vision. Paige says, "i really like Grandview a lot. It's a very positive environment here - everyone is very friendly. I'm always busy so the time goes fast." As a result of her co-op experience at Grandview, Paige shared, "I know now that I want to work with kids who have disabilities, perhaps at a centre similar to Grandview." When she's not in school or at Grandview, Paige is very busy with a part time job, and she enjoys being in the outdoors camping, portaging, swimming, hiking, canoeing.
Beth Jeronimo is from Kingston, Ontario, but is living with relatives in Oshawa while she's at Grandview for her placement from May 6 to June 28, 2013. Beth has earned a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and French from the University of Western Ontario, and is working toward a Masters of Clinical Science in speech-language pathology. During her placement, Beth's Clinical Supervisor is Speech-Language Patholigst Sabrina Bellows and she is working with clients who are part of Grandview's multi-team program. Beth has enjoyed observing Sabrina during the Hanen More Than Words parent workshops, and participating in multi-team assessments and treatment with clients. Beth's goal for her placement is, "to take what I've learned in school and put it into practice to develop my skills specifically with this population (children with disabilities) to prepare myself for work." Beth has completed placements in various areas and has enjoyed all of them, and although she hasn't yet settled on a career path she knows her career will be in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. When she's not studying, Beth enjoys reading and being outside to run and bike ride.
Welcome to Grandview, Paige and Beth!
